Thirty-four
years ago, Reverend Kevin F. Dulgnan, pastor of St. Vincent
de Paul Parish, listened to the parish consensus of building
a school and moved forward on the venture.
The school doors were opened on August 30th, 1976, with just one
class -- Kindergarten. The master plan called for Kindergarten
to open the first year, and one grade to be added every year after
that for the next eight years.
The Kindergarten was
fully accredited by the State of Alabama Department of Education and had the
full approval of the Catholic Department of Education. The first
Kindergarten class had twenty-four students. The first Principal was
Mrs. Barbara Boudreaux.
Over the past
thirty years, a lot of changes have taken place at St. Vincent de Paul
School. In 1981, a new school building was built to house grades 3 and
up, as well as administrative offices, a kitchen, and a cafeteria. The
younger grades were still housed in barracks brought from Brookley Field.
In 1990, the school saw the end of combined classrooms. In 2001, a new
Early Childhood building was constructed which has four classrooms (K-4,
K-5, and Grades 1-2), a teachers' lounge, and a counselor's office. In
January of 2006, St. Vincent de Paul was accredited by SACS (Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools).
Today on staff, St. Vincent de Paul School has 11 classrooms
teachers (K- 4 through 8th Grade), a P. E. teacher, a counselor,
a Librarian, a Computer Teacher, Reading and Math Coaches,
a Principal, a school secretary, a Development Director,
three cafeteria ladies and a maintenance man. At
present, the school enrollment is 180 students. Ms.
Mary McLendon is the present Principal and Mrs. Linda Girby
is the Assistant Principal. Reverend Den Irwin is
the Pastor. |
